People really like barbecues. Not saying that you shouldn’t, but people really like ’em. Custom aprons, a mountain of coleslaw, and enough lighter fluid to make Johnny Storm jealous. Flow has never hosted a Great American Barbecue Challenge, but if we did... Oh boy, if we did. First, Joey Chestnut, you need to skip. Then we’d invite all of our Flow neighbors, members of Flow Trip Magazine, and friends like you. That’s about the size of Madison Square Garden for attendance. Spike Lee and Brunson, both invited. We’d probably see if we could do one of those really long picnic tables with red and white tablecloths. Then we’d see if we can find Bill Durney and ask him how the hell we’re supposed to feed all these people. Then we’d ask Ryan from Guster and Lily Meola if they could come play a couple of songs while everyone hung out. Slip-n-slides, croquet, dunk tank, and soap box car races down a big hill nearby. Man, people really like barbecues for some reason. We’ve got our work cut out for us. Might be a few weeks before we’re back. Take care of each other. See you at the checkered flag.

“As convenient as the pencil.” George Eastman had one big ole mission during his heyday: to make photography accessible to anyone and everyone. So that any regular person could pick up a camera and take a photo, no fuss necessary. We’re pretty glad the high school dropout and photo hobbyist followed his dreams and brought us Kodak. It started as a pretty simple idea, but the impact changed photography as we know it. From capturing pictures of the first American in space to the birds in our backyards, Kodak gets the timing right. One of the reasons we shook hands and partnered up with them for another year of The Flow Photo Contest. You can learn more about Mr. Eastman’s story here. A Photography Contest for Photographers

Nature, Surf, Energy, Oneness, Film. In case you forgot, those are the categories for this year’s Flow Photo Contest. Six bucks to enter and the possibility of taking home $50,000, starting April 6th. Any photo will do — even that one of your dog chasing a squirrel. We want to see it.

A brown bat usually sleeps about 19.9 hours per day, whereas a giraffe sleeps about 1.3 hours per day. True things. Also, you should know that within 5 minutes of waking, 50 percent of your dreams are forgotten; and within 10 minutes, 90 percent are gone. Drum roll, please… The Flow Photo Contest presented by Kodak opens on April 6th. This year’s categories include Nature, Surf, Energy, Oneness, and good old-fashioned Film. If These Trees Could Talk

Someday, a very smart person will finally decipher tree language and figure out what they’ve been trying to tell us this whole time. While we wait, learning about the myths and legends behind some of the more interesting varieties of our woody neighbors is a good way to explore their silent lives. The Roots Issue isn’t too shabby either, but we might be biased.

A Survey Just for You

Your Dog Dreams About You

Harvard psychologist, Dr. Deirdre Barrett, studied canine sleep behavior and concluded that they replay their day during REM sleep. And since most of a dog’s day revolves around their human, that means… we don’t deserve dogs.

What Is a Worry Doll?

Oh, here’s the answer. Worry dolls are tiny, hand-crafted dolls from the highlands of Guatemala. Before bed, you whisper your worries to the doll, tuck it under your pillow, and by morning, the doll has done all the worrying for you. More to know about Guatemala here.

The artists are in the building. We repeat, the artists are in the building. YoYo Nasty, Amani Lewis, Monica Olivo, Kendell James, Diana Eusebio. The new faces who have joined the ranks of Flow’s Artist Residency Program for the next six weeks. Five different humans with one thing in common: A love for creating and bringing people together through the power of art. Keep your eyes peeled for a feature or two about these folks over on the Flow Stories site from time to time (hint, wink, hint). From big cats to glitter to making space in their work for exploring new mediums and cultural identity. There’s a decent chance you’ll see a piece or two of theirs in place like MoMA or The Louvre in the years to come. That good, friends. This group is the whole package, and we’re honored and grateful to call them neighbors.
