David Bowie loved the Internet. Okay, maybe not loved, but he really liked it and was one of the earlier users of the World Wide Web in the late-80s. In fact, Mr. Bowie was so impressed with the Internet that the late musician created his own server, BowieNet. Ziggy Stardust admitted he frequented the chat rooms under an alias and chatted with fans more often than one might think. Less secretly, he even ran a contest for a lucky user to help him co-write a song. Through a paid website on the server, fans could also access BowieWorld, where they could make an avatar and walk around a 3D simulation regularly decorated by the alien rockstar himself. But before you go downloading a program that steals all of your information and replaces the files on your computer with a copy of the Bee Movie script, BowieNet met its end in 2006 for a reason that the Internet does not disclose. Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes. The more we learn about David Bowie, the more we think he was an actual alien. Here are some other fun things for a Friday in May.
Happy belated birthday, Sir Attenborough. His most important message yet.
Look for the Helpers
In the Netherlands, there’s a nursing home that offers students free rent in exchange for keeping the residents company, sort of like an in-person pen pal. Probably the most wholesome way to save some cash these days.
Size Doesn’t Matter
The tallest dog in the world met the shortest dog in the world for the first time. No one got stepped on, but the footage should probably go in a museum somewhere.
