If you’re reading this then you’re likely familiar with the fact that we’re big music fans over here. It’s no secret that a good playlist, like this one, is the way to our heart. But we’d like to take a moment today to consider a time before playlists, music apps, and even those flat round things people called CDs existed. A time when you had to endure turbulence on a 10-hour flight to Europe by staring at the back of a headrest, white-knuckling the armrest, and the sweet sounds of babies crying as your only comfort. Sony co-founder Masaru Ibuka wasn’t too stoked on that last one either. So he took matters into his own hands — or ears rather — and helped release the Walkman on July 1st, 1979. Naturally, this revolutionized the way we listen to music as we know it — whether from the seat of a jetplane or the desk at the office. The Walkman walked (badum-ts) so other forms of portable music that we won’t take the time to list out here but you’re probably using right now could run. A little bit of history on this fine Monday afternoon.
