211 years old. For those keeping count, that’s the age of the oldest known whale — the bowhead, which gets its name from its enormous head that looks like, you guessed right, an archer’s bow. This particular whale has seen a lot during its time on Earth. Moon landings, the invention of the light bulb, 11 live-action Superman films, the day that humans figured out whales are sentient beings, amongst other things that are likely trivial to whales. We’ve actually never asked their opinion on the progress of humans over the years. There is a group, however, called Project CETI, who seem to be having some luck using the latest AI tools and technology to communicate with whales. Bet Mr. Bowhead didn’t think he’d see that in his lifetime. You can learn more about what they’re trying to say and other worthwhile information about the gentle giants in The Whale Issue, shipping now. Happy swimming.

Rooted Recipes
Harvest season is upon us, and there’s really nothing quite like cooking with the fruits of your own labor. Might we recommend some wild onion pancakes or Brad Leone’s charred radishes for your next Sunday night dinner?
David Attenborough’s iPhone
It might be hard to believe that the filming behind Planet Earth II wasn’t David Attenborough walking around with his smartphone filming a bunch of birds. Really, it was just some 2,000 days of shooting across 40 countries — no biggie. So here’s how it came to life.
The Anti-Surf Surf Contest
RedBull’s annual anti-surf surf contest is back, where anyone can win, even that chicken from Surf’s Up. This weekend at Deerfield Beach, Florida. Might wanna leave the wax at home for this one.
