If there was ever a day that you might look out the window and see a herd of horses running wild in a field, today’s the day. Some bigwigs somewhere decided that July 11th is officially World Horse Day — a whole day dedicated to celebrating one of humanity’s oldest friends. Humans and their steeds started their ‘ole partnership nearly 5,000 years ago, and it’s more than a little incredible what we’ve all accomplished together. Plus, they might be the only species in the animal kingdom with a whole animated (and silent, might we add) movie about them that has won an Academy Award. Nice one, Mr. Zimmer. There’s likely a lesson in there. Maybe something about the unspeakable bond between animals and us humans. Or that our connection with the natural world might just be the answer to a whole lot of our problems. Things to think about while you watch Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron this weekend.
