On January 30, 1969, the folks on the roof of the Apple Corp headquarters in London were witness to a live performance by The Beatles. 55 years ago today, Sally in the building next door, Sally’s neighbor taking their lunch break, the stray cats in the alley, and anyone else on the street was graced with five brand new tracks by the lads from Liverpool. All those lucky ducks and cats got to go home and tell their friends, “I just saw John, Paul, Ringo, and George singing from the rooftops." The cats likely just went on catting. As it happens, the surprise show would be the band's final public performance. The beginning of the end of Beatlemania. But apparently, the whole thing was really more of a rehearsal. After the final take, John quipped, “I’d like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we've passed the audition.” Thankfully the whole thing was recorded, so you can be the judge of that 55 years later by watching the magic unfold here.
