It might come as a surprise that the “National Park City” designation does not refer to a city run by park rangers and bison, where the mayor is each city’s unique but oddly similar version of the red hat man, and local government is headed up by our pals over at The National Park Service. Although that sounds like a good time as any, you might want to think twice before putting ideas into our heads. A National Park City is a little more along the lines of celebrating increased access to nature and investing a good amount of time and resources into the sustainable coexistence of its residents — humans, animals, and plants alike. The good news is North America just got its first: Chattanooga, Tennessee. A place that has dedicated itself to weaving nature into even its most urban streets by making life a little greener, wilder, and overall healthier for everyone involved. No red hat man yet, but off to a good start. Put it on the bucket list, Sally.
